  • People need to participate in activities in order to gain their self-confidence and secure a position in community.
  • Activities are the whole of actions done with the purpose of reducing loss of functions due to the disease, regulating life and increasing performance or disclosing talents unnoticed despite the disease and making them usable in social life.
  • Concept of activity is based on occupational and social participation as a vital resource. The activeness of the elderly is determined by earlier style of life, her/his socio-economical situation and level of wellbeing. People, enjoy life as long as they are active.

HOME ACTIVITIES

Which object is for what?

Purpose

The activity requires recognition and description of each object, with the aim of protecting the knowledge of the elderly about the objects used in daily life.

Material

Objects used in daily life, easy to identify (pen, watch, notebook, ball, sock, fork, spoon, beaker, etc.)

Application

A conversation is initiated with the elderly about the objects laid and she/he is led to continue with descriptions or may be memories.

Season Fruits and Vegetables

Purpose

The activity aims recognition and description of fruits and vegetables to reserve her/his knowledge.

Material

Seasonal fruits and vegetables present at home – or their pictures (leek, spinach, carrot, Tangerine, orange, banana, apple, pear, quince, etc.)

Application

A conversation is promoted with the elderly about the fruits and vegetables displayed and she/he is asked to describe tastes and which ones she/he likes/dislikes or which ones are fruits and which ones are vegetables.

Sequencing Actions

Purpose

The activity aims to make the elderly think about the daily activities and remember the joyful events in her/his life and therefore reserve mental skills and cheer up the person.

Material

Cards with pictures displaying the beginning, development and end of activities or events. Any activity/event car set would do.

Application

A conversation is started with the elderly about the daily life activities or past events that are meaningful to the person and she/he is asked to put the cards in chronological order.

 

For example; the person may be asked to put the cards representing the activities to be done after getting up in the morning in order (getting gup, having breakfast, brushing teeth, reading newspapers, etc.).
Another example; the photo album of the elderly can be used to put past events in chronological order.

Animals and the Places They Live

Purpose

To help the elderly to remember animals and reserve mental abilities.

Material

Cards or posters with pictures of animals.

Application

A conversation about the animals below is initiated and some questions may be asked:

What are the names of the animals?

How do they sound?

Which animals live in a farm?

Which animals are pets?

Opposite Concepts

 Purpose

It is aimed to let the elderly remember the concept of opposites, colour distiction and the use of objects in order to reserve her/his mental skills.

Material

Cards or pictures with opposite objects.

Application

Cards with opposite objects are shown to the elderly and she/he is asked to tell the colour, use and the opposite of each picture. For example; big red apple small red apple

Rice- Chickpeas

Purpose

Fine motor muscles are aimed in this activity and also the exercise of counting ability.

Material

Chickpeas, rice and two bowls.

Application

In one bowl rice and chickpeas are mixed and the elderly is asked to pick the chickpeas and place in the second bowl. In the second step she/he is asked to count the chickpeas.

Lemon Press with Water Colour

Purpose

The purpose here is to increase the saliva of the elderly with the application of lemon and ease her/his digestive system and avoid dry mouth syndrome very common with elderly.

Material

Lemon, water colour and drawing paper.

Application

Lemons are used to paint with the help of water colour. During the activity it is advisable to chat about lemons:

What colour is lemon?

Where do lemons grow?

How are lemons picked

How is lemonade made?

What are the other fruits that look like lemon? (grapefruit, tangerine, orange, etc.)

Completion of Dotted Lines and Colouring

Purpose

Motor and mental abilities are targeted.

Material

Pictures with dotted lines, e.g. a boat picture.

Application

The elderly is asked to follow the dots in the picture and draw the lines to complete the picture. Then she/he is asked what it is and then she/he is allowed to colour it.

Purpose

Pictures of clothes that can be coloured.

Application

The elderly is given pictures like below and asked to colour them as she/he pleases. Then, the elderly is asked to cut the pieces using the dotted lines guides.

Purpose

The activity has the objective of protection of the mental skills of the elderly by the method of matching.

Material

Socks or pictures of socks; pictures of animals and their footprints.

Application

Pictures of socks can be used as well as real socks present at home and the elderly is asked to match them. Also, pictures of animals and their footprints can be used for matching purposes.

Purpose

Application

A flower is cut out of the tinted paper and this flower is glued to the plain paper. Then the photo is glued in the middle of the flower and a stem is drawn using colour pencils/crayons.

Purpose
